Amazon's Zoox Applies for US Safety Exemption to Deploy Automated Vehicles
Sep 24, 2025 8:51 AM

11:34 AM EDT, 09/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Amazon's ( AMZN ) Zoox self-driving car unit has filed an application with the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration seeking a temporary exemption from several Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to deploy its automated driving system-equipped passenger vehicles without a human driver onboard, according to a Federal Register notice scheduled to be published Thursday.

The petition covers exemptions from requirements such as windshield defrosting, wipers, lamps and reflective devices, rear visibility, brake systems, occupant protection, and glazing materials.

The NHTSA said it is reviewing the application and will later publish a notice seeking public comment before deciding whether to grant or deny the request.
