AMC, Cinemark Log Five-Day Thanksgiving Holiday Records
Dec 2, 2024 9:51 AM

12:31 PM EST, 12/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- AMC Entertainment ( AMC ) and Cinemark (CNK) said Monday that they logged record box office collections across the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period, driven by the release of Walt Disney's ( DIS ) "Moana 2."

The animated musical film grossed an aggregate of $221 million domestically between Wednesday and Sunday across 4,200 theaters, according to BoxOfficeMojo, owned by Amazon.com ( AMZN ) company IMDb. Comcast ( CMCSA ) -owned Universal Pictures' "Wicked" came in second, collecting $117.5 million over the five-day period, followed by Paramount Global's ( PARAA ) "Gladiator II" at $44 million.

AMC said the five-day period was the "biggest and busiest" Thanksgiving holiday stretch in the company's history, based on attendance, admissions revenue and food and beverage sales, surpassing the previous records set in 2018. About 8.8 million people attended AMC's cinemas in the US and Odeon screens around the world, the theater chain said.

"This 5-day Thanksgiving period in 2024 was one for the ages," AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron said in a statement.

The company said that Friday was its second highest revenue day ever, behind the opening weekend Saturday for Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. Friday was also AMC's highest attendance for a Black Friday, while Thursday was its busiest Thanksgiving Day in history.

In a separate statement, Cinemark said it achieved multiple "all-time domestic records" throughout the Thanksgiving holiday period. The five-day period represented the "best" box office stretch in the company's history, while it had the "most" single-day viewers in the post-pandemic era on Friday.

"We are thrilled with Cinemark's record-breaking results over the long holiday as movie going demand surged for the highly anticipated release of Moana 2," CEO Sean Gamble said. "These record-breaking box office, premium formats, and food and beverage results further accentuate the cultural impact an immersive, cinematic experience delivers for content across all genres."

Cinemark said it recorded its second-best box office for November, driven by the domestic performance over the Thanksgiving holiday.
