06:21 AM EST, 01/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- American Airlines ( AAL ) regional jet collided midair with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday night, multiple news outlets reported Thursday.

Both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, triggering an extensive rescue effort, these reports said.

Flight 5342, operated by American's regional unit American Eagle, departed from Wichita, Kansas, with 60 passengers and four crew members including figure skaters, their families, and coaches, while the helicopter had three soldiers on board, according to these reports.

No official casualty or survivor numbers have been confirmed, but reports indicated that at least 13 bodies have been recovered from the river so far.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, and American Airlines ( AAL ) chief executive officer Robert Isom said the airline is fully cooperating with the investigation, news outlets reported

American Airlines ( AAL ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Shares of the company were down almost 3% in recent Thursday premarket activity.
