American Express Second-Quarter Results Top Views; Maintains Full-Year Outlook
Jul 18, 2025 6:14 AM

08:57 AM EDT, 07/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- American Express ( AXP ) reported better-than-expected second-quarter results on Friday amid robust card member spending, while the payments company reiterated its full-year outlook.

Adjusted earnings rose to $4.08 a share for the June quarter from $3.49 a year ago, topping the FactSet-polled consensus of $3.88. The result excludes the $0.66 per-share gain related to the company's sale of Accertify last year.

Revenue, net of interest expense, improved 9% to $17.86 billion, driven by higher net interest income, increased card member spending and continued card fee growth, American Express ( AXP ) said. The Street was looking for $17.72 billion in revenue. The stock was up 1% in the most recent premarket activity.

"We saw record card member spending in the quarter, demand for our premium products was strong, and our credit performance remained best in class," Chief Executive Stephen Squeri said in a statement.

The firm continues to project per-share earnings of $15 to $15.5 and revenue to grow between 8% and 10% for 2025. The current consensus on FactSet is for GAAP EPS of $15.23 and sales of $71.35 billion.

"We are confident in our ability to sustain our leadership in the premium space, drawing on our competitive strengths," according to Squeri. "We see a long runway for growth."

US consumer services revenue advanced 11% to $8.55 billion in the second quarter, while international card services climbed 15% to $3.23 billion. Commercial services rose 7% to $4.21 billion, while global merchant and network services moved 3% higher to $1.93 billion.

Provisions for credit losses totaled $1.41 billion, compared with $1.27 billion a year earlier, reflecting higher net write-offs driven by growth in loans and card member receivables, as well as a higher net reserve build, American Express ( AXP ) said.
