06:41 AM EDT, 08/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- American Water Works' ( AWK ) California unit said late Thursday it filed a motion for summary judgment asking the Monterey County Superior Court to rule in its favor and dismiss the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District's lawsuit seeking to take ownership of its Monterey Peninsula water system through eminent domain.

"The motion argues that the district cannot meet fundamental legal requirements needed to proceed with its action, which therefore should be dismissed," California American Water said.

The district has never been an operator of a public water system responsible for the provision of safe drinking water, the company said.

American Water shares were up 1.2% in recent premarket activity Friday.
