07:20 AM EDT, 10/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- American Water Works ( AWK ) said in a regulatory filing Monday that it detected unauthorized activity within its computer systems and networks on Oct. 3.

The company said it believes its water and wastewater facilities and operations were not affected by the cybersecurity incident and added that it does not expect the incident to have a material effect on its financial condition or results of operations.

American Water said it "immediately" activated its cybersecurity incident response protocols and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to contain and mitigate the impact. The company also said it notified law enforcement and is coordinating with them in the ongoing investigation.

American Water has disconnected or deactivated certain systems to prevent further access as part of the measures to safeguard its systems.
