Anthropic Bars Chinese-Owned Firms From Accessing Services
Sep 5, 2025 4:00 AM

06:39 AM EDT, 09/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Anthropic said Friday that it is prohibiting access to entities based in China, citing a risk that its services could be used to further "authoritarian" goals.

Anthropic, which has received an investment from Amazon ( AMZN ) , said companies that operate in regions like China face pressures that could force businesses to share data, work with intelligence agencies, or participate in activities that risk the United States' national security.

It added that businesses which operate in these regions could also use Anthropic's models to potentially advance their own AI capabilities through techniques like distillation.

The restrictions apply to entities that are more than 50% owned, directly or indirectly, by companies headquartered in unsupported regions like China, it said.
