09:03 AM EST, 03/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) has been asked by the European Commission to provide "further explanations" about the iPhone maker's termination of Epic Games Sweden's developer account, an EC spokesperson confirmed to MT Newswires on Thursday.
The scrutiny comes after Epic Games said Wednesday that Apple ( AAPL ) had terminated its Sweden developer account in an alleged violation of the EU's Digital Markets Act which became effective Thursday.
"We are also evaluating whether Apple's ( AAPL ) actions raise doubts on their compliance with the DSA and the P2B, given the links between the developer programme membership and the App store," the EC spokesperson said referring to the EU's Digital Services Act and Platform-to-Business rules.
According to the Platform-to-Business regulation, a platform must inform a business user about any modifications to terms and conditions and give prior notice before terminating an account, the spokesperson added.
An Apple ( AAPL ) spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires that "Epic's egregious breach of its contractual obligations to Apple ( AAPL ) led courts to determine that Apple ( AAPL ) has the right to terminate 'any or all of Epic Games' wholly owned subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or other entities under Epic Games' control at any time and at Apple's ( AAPL ) sole discretion.' In light of Epic's past and ongoing behavior, Apple ( AAPL ) chose to exercise that right."
