06:13 AM EST, 02/04/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) condemned the release of a pornography app on iPhones in the European Union, blaming the Digital Markets Act for undermining consumer confidence in its ecosystem, multiple media outlets reported late Monday.
The Digital Markets Act, adopted in 2022, required Apple ( AAPL ) to allow alternative app stores. The pornography app was released through AltStore, an alternative app marketplace founded by Fortnite video game creator Epic Games.
Apple ( AAPL ) said it is "deeply concerned" about safety risks, particularly for children. "This app and others like it will undermine consumer trust and confidence in our ecosystem," Apple ( AAPL ) said as quoted by media reports. The app did, however, pass Apple's ( AAPL ) notarization process, which is a security check for malware that does not require content approval.
Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
