02:51 PM EDT, 05/30/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) will begin offering Japanese citizens the ability to load their My Number national identification card on to their iPhones, according to media reports Thursday.

The function was already available on Android smartphones and would allow citizens to use their iPhone to interact with public service providers instead of their physical card, the report said.

The functionality could come next spring, Japan Today reported.

Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
