Apple to Start Allowing Used Parts for iPhone Repairs
Apr 12, 2024 8:57 AM

11:21 AM EDT, 04/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) said Thursday it will allow used genuine Apple ( AAPL ) parts for repairs of selected iPhone models beginning this fall.

"Used genuine Apple ( AAPL ) parts will now benefit from the full functionality and security afforded by the original factory calibration, just like new genuine Apple ( AAPL ) parts," the company said.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that replacing some parts in older versions of the iPhone with used parts causes the device to display an on-screen warning that some features would be disabled. Users would only get full functionality if an authorized repair technician used new Apple ( AAPL ) parts that had been approved via a "system configuration" process, the report said.

Apple ( AAPL ) also said Thursday that clients and service providers will no longer have to provide the serial number of devices to order parts from the company's Self Service Repair Store, as long as those repairs don't involve the replacement of the logic board. Self Service Repair supports 40 of the company's products in 33 countries and regions, Apple ( AAPL ) said.

Additionally, Apple ( AAPL ) said it will extend its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts to deter theft. If an iPhone under repair detects that a part came from another iPhone with enabled Activation Lock or Lost Mode, calibration capabilities for that part will be restricted, according to the company.
