Apple Used Google Chips to Develop AI Platform, Research Paper Indicates
Jul 30, 2024 10:38 AM

01:19 PM EDT, 07/30/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) has been using chips developed by Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) to create its artificial intelligence platforms, a research paper released by Apple ( AAPL ) shows.

The research report released Monday describes how the company's Apple Foundation Models were "pre-trained on v4 and v5p Cloud TPU clusters," referring to Google's ( GOOG ) tensor processing units. This suggests Apple ( AAPL ) has been using alternatives to Nvidia ( NVDA ) chips, while it works to develop its Apple Intelligence that underpins future versions of its operating systems.

Nvidia ( NVDA ) typically has been the go-to source during the recent AI surge, but has been riddled with higher prices and supply issues. Google's ( GOOG ) Cloud TPU web service is emerging as a potential rival.

Apple ( AAPL ) on Monday introduced a beta version of its Apple Intelligence at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference. The research paper detailed how it developed the generative AI platform and its architecture using Applebot web-crawler to curate publicly available as well as licensed data to help train the system.
