Apple's Potential Acquisition of Perplexity AI Poses Risks, UBS Says
Jun 26, 2025 9:13 AM

11:45 AM EDT, 06/26/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Apple's ( AAPL ) potential acquisition of Perplexity AI for $14 billion to integrate the artificial intelligence-based search engine into its Safari browser and Siri functionality poses multiple risks, UBS said in a Thursday report.

The iPhone maker is considering to either acquire Perplexity AI or form a partnership with the company to integrate its AI-powered functions into Siri, the analysts said, citing a recent Bloomberg report.

While the acquisition cost is a manageable risk for Apple ( AAPL ), its track record of integrating major acquisitions has been mixed, according to the note.

Apple's ( AAPL ) "underwhelming" AI efforts, combined with allegations facing Perplexity around plagiarism and unauthorized content use, may not translate into a positive catalyst for the company, UBS analysts said.

The outcome of a pending US Department of Justice antitrust lawsuit against Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ), alleging it retained its search dominance by paying billions to Apple ( AAPL ), is a key factor determining Apple's ( AAPL ) pursuit of a Perplexity deal, the analysts said.

UBS has a neutral rating on the stock with a $210 price target.
