07:11 AM EDT, 10/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Archer-Daniels-Midland Company ( ADM ) was slapped with a lawsuit over allegations of negligence that caused an explosion and serious harm to an employee last year, news outlets reported Thursday.

The lawsuit was filed in an Illinois district court by attorney Timothy Shay on behalf of the victim, Antonio McElrath, 44, who suffered third-degree burns, was put into a coma, and continues recovery after an explosion at an Archer Daniels Midland ( ADM ) facility in Decatur, Illinois, WCIA television news reported.

The lawsuit alleges that the explosion was part of a string of incidents caused by intentional negligence at the company's Decatur headquarters, Reuters reported.

McElrath said the plaintiffs "will be seeking millions of dollars," WCIA reported.

Archer Daniels Midland ( ADM ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
