07:31 AM EDT, 09/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- AT&T ( T ) has agreed to remove its abandoned telecommunications cables that contain lead from Lake Tahoe to settle a legal battle with the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance or CSPA, according to the group Wednesday.
As part of the settlement deal, CSPA said AT&T ( T ) will remove about 107,000 pounds of lead from approximately 6 miles of submerged cables in Lake Tahoe.
CSPA said that AT&T ( T ) restarted the litigation after their conditional settlement in 2022 to "determine the merits" of its claims that AT&T's ( T ) cables discharged lead into the lake, violating certain laws and posing risks to human health and the environment. According to CSPA, its investigation showed that the cables have been damaged, exposing the lead conduit in several locations.
AT&T ( T ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
