11:29 AM EDT, 06/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Baidu ( BIDU ) said Monday it's launching an open source version of its generative artificial intelligence large language model Ernie.

The latest AI model family is open source to "support future research and development in the field," the company said.

CNBC reported Monday that Baidu's ( BIDU ) move to make the Ernie AI model open source is a threat to Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI as well as to Anthropic and also to Baidu's ( BIDU ) Chinese rival DeepSeek.
