08:51 AM EDT, 06/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing's ( BA ) two 737 Max crash victims' families are seeking a $24.78 billion fine against the company, their lawyer stated in a letter to the US Department of Justice's Criminal Division.
The families are seeking the penalty as Boeing's ( BA ) "crime is the deadliest corporate crime" in US history, the letter, dated Wednesday, and sent by Paul G. Cassell, the lawyer representing 15 of the crash victims' families, stated.
The fine may be partially suspended by $14 billion to $22 billion if the company decides to "devote" those suspended funds to improve compliance and safety measures, the letter states.
The families' lawyer also said in the letter the DoJ should carry out "criminal prosecutions" for those who were at the company, including former Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg, during two fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
In the 32-page letter, the lawyer asked the DoJ to "promptly" ask Judge Reed O'Connor of the US Northern District of Texas, where litigation is pending as US v Boeing ( BA ), to set a date for a jury trial within 70 days of July 7.
"A single conspiracy charge for fraud in a case revolving around 346 deaths is already extremely lenient treatment for such an extraordinarily serious crime," the families said.
Boeing ( BA ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
