12:23 PM EDT, 06/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Boeing ( BA ) said Thursday it is checking certain undelivered 787 Dreamliner jetliners for incorrectly installed fasteners.
The plane maker told MT Newswires in a statement it found some fasteners common to the side of body longerons and straps "torqued" incorrectly. The company's review is ongoing to see what caused the problem and whether any rework is required for all the planes in its inventory. This may have a limited or no impact on deliveries, Boeing ( BA ) said.
The statement came after Reuters reported earlier in the day that Boeing ( BA ) was probing a new issue with the 787. Sources reportedly said the company was looking at the incorrect tightening in a plant of more than 900 fasteners per plane, split equally between both sides of the jet's mid-body.
"Our 787 team is checking fasteners in the side-of-body area of some undelivered 787 Dreamliner airplanes to ensure they meet our engineering specifications," Boeing ( BA ) told MT Newswires. "The in-service fleet can continue to safely operate."
The company is not rushing its investigation and hasn't paused deliveries of new 787s and is working with the Federal Aviation Administration on the matter and plans to keep the regulator updated.
The FAA didn't immediately respond to a request for comment by MT Newswires.
The FAA launched an investigation into Boeing ( BA ) in January after a 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Air (ALK) suffered a mid-air panel blowout. The agency ordered an immediate grounding of the model flown by other airlines as it sought to increase oversight of Boeing's ( BA ) production and manufacturing.
Chief Executive Dave Calhoun is scheduled to testify before a US Senate panel next week to discuss Boeing's ( BA ) failures.
