05:35 AM EDT, 03/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Japan Airlines said Thursday it will purchase 32 Airbus jets and 10 Boeing ( BA ) aircraft (BA) as part of a plan to renew its fleet and expand its presence globally.
Among the planes the company said it will acquire are 21 Airbus A350-900 planes, 11 single-aisle Airbus A321neo jets, and 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
The purchase of the A321neo breaks Boeing's ( BA ) monopoly on the airline as the sole supplier of its single-aisle jets, Bloomberg News reported.
Japan Airlines, part of the One World Alliance, did not disclose financial details of the transactions. It said the new planes would reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
The 787-9s will replace Japan's fleet of 787-800s on domestic flights beginning in 2026. The Airbus aircraft will be mostly dedicated to international flights, and begin coming online in 2027.
"These new aircraft introductions aim to enhance and expand the capacity of Japan Airlines's international operations, with a primary focus on regions such as North America, Asia, and India where future growth is expected," the company said.
