SAO PAULO, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Brazilian pulp maker Suzano
posted a 23% decline in its second-quarter core
profit and missed market estimates, as a lower sales volume for
its key product more than offset favourable higher prices.
Suzano, the world's largest producer of pulp, reported a
core profit, or adjusted earnings before interest, taxes,
depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), of 4.71 billion reais
($907.4 million) in the April-June period.
Analysts polled by LSEG had the key indicator at 5.05
billion reais.
The firm attributed the results to a drop in volume sales of
pulp, which represent about 76% of its total revenue, and paper,
along with a local currency appreciation that eroded the value
of its dollar-denominated exports.
"Compared to the same period in 2025, the sharp appreciation
of the currency, combined with a decline in volume and higher
costs, explains the negative change," the company said in its
earnings report.
Suzano's pulp sales dropped 11% in the quarter to 2.9
million metric tons, while the net average price per ton rose
8%, bringing the segment's net revenue to 8.76 billion reais,
down 15% from a year earlier.
While Suzano's pulp unit continues to make up the bulk of
its business, its paper segment also weighed on quarterly
performance, as sales fell 1% to some 406,000 tons, driving net
revenue down 6% to 2.83 billion reais.
Suzano's second-quarter total net revenue decreased 13% to
11.59 billion reais, below analysts' forecast of 12.13 billion
reais, while its net profit dropped 64% to 1.81 billion reais.
Despite the struggles, the firm said that recent
geopolitical tensions and cost pressures did not affect the
resilience of the global pulp market.
