10:40 AM EST, 12/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- ByteDance and TikTok have requested that a US appeals court temporarily block a law that would force ByteDance to sell TikTok by Jan. 19 or face a ban pending a Supreme Court review, multiple media outlets reported Monday, citing a court filing.
The companies warned that without the temporary block, TikTok, which has over 170 million monthly users in the US, would be shut down just before the presidential inauguration speech, Reuters reported, citing the filing.
Pausing the law would give the President-elect Donald Trump's administration time to decide on the issue, potentially avoiding the need for a Supreme Court review, Bloomberg reported.
ByteDance and TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
