06:21 AM EDT, 09/30/2024 (MT Newswires) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the artificial intelligence safety bill, Senate Bill 1047, saying the legislation could give a "false sense of security" over controlling AI, according to a Sunday statement from the Newsom's office.
According to media reports, tech giants such as Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ), Meta Platforms ( META ) , Microsoft ( MSFT ) , and OpenAI also opposed the legislation.
Newsom said the bill only focuses on the "most expensive and large-scale models" though smaller models could be equally or even more dangerous. The governor also noted that the bill does not consider whether an Al system uses sensitive data, involves critical decision-making, or is deployed in a high-risk environment.
Newsom said the bill is "well-inentioned" but is not the best approach in ensuring public safety. The governor also said he is committed to working with stakeholders "to find the appropriate path forward, including legislation and regulation."
Google ( GOOG ), Meta Platforms ( META ) , Microsoft ( MSFT ), and OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comments.
