01:19 PM EDT, 04/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Cal-Maine Foods ( CALM ) said Tuesday it shut an egg production facility in Parmer County, Texas, temporarily after positive tests for highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI.
The company said 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 pullets at the facility were culled, or about 3.6% of its total flock as of March 2. Cal-Maine said it is working to secure production from other facilities to minimize supply disruption.
"There is no known risk related to HPAI associated with eggs that are currently in the market and no eggs have been recalled," the company said.
The human health risk to the public from HPAI viruses is considered to be low, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said, according to the company.
