10:30 AM EST, 01/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian National Railway ( CNI ) said Thursday it has launched a new medium-horsepower hybrid electric locomotive in partnership with Knoxville Locomotive Works.
The locomotive will be tested across CN's network to measure its ability to improve operational efficiency and fuel savings, the railway company said.
Built on a traditional low-horsepower CN locomotive, it delivers up to 3,200 horsepower and uses a 2.4 megawatt-hour, 700 horsepower battery-diesel engine that is 100% biofuel ready, Canadian National said. The hybrid system is expected to cut fuel consumption by as much as 50% compared with typical locomotives in similar service, according to the company.
Canadian National said it will roll out the locomotive over the next six months at several yards and branch lines in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, eventually expanding trials to cold weather operations in Western Canada.
