04:45 AM EDT, 08/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian National Railway ( CNI ) said Thursday it has locked out employees represented by the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference after the union did not respond to a final offer.
The company said the offer included higher wages, fewer working days and a pilot project for hourly rates and scheduled shifts.
"Without an agreement or binding arbitration, [Canadian National Railway ( CNI )] had no choice but to finalize a safe and orderly shutdown and proceed with a lockout", the company said.
In its own statement, Teamsters Canada said it put forward multiple offers over the past several days, none of which were seriously considered by the company.
"The main obstacles to reaching an agreement remain the companies' demands, not union proposals," Teamsters Canada said.
