The project completion increases overall capacity at the Genesee generating station by 512 megawatts (MW), or by 60%, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 3.4 million tonnes annually, or by 40%.
The project involved installing two new gas-fired combustion turbines and triple-pressure heat recovery steam generators while utilizing Genesee Units 1 and 2's existing steam turbine generators.
"Our Genesee Repowering project is immensely impactful for North American power generation, demonstrating there is a valuable life after coal for legacy facilities," said Avik Dey, president and CEO of Capital Power ( CPXWF ).
The Genesee generating station is now capable of delivering up to 1,857 MW of electricity.
