The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ordered an investigation against Google based on allegations by an anonymous complainant on Google's policy of mandating in-app purchases or purchase of apps to be routed through Google Play Billing System and its 30 percent fee for such transactions, as well as on allegations that Google encourages pre-installation of Google Pay as a default payment option on new smart mobile devices that use the android OS.
While CCI found prima facie merit in these two allegations, it dismissed four other allegations around search manipulation and bias by Google in favour of Google Pay, prominent placement of Google Pay on the Play Store, search advertisement manipulation on the Play Store and exclusivity requirement imposed by Google resulting in unfair terms being imposed on users.
To discuss this development and what it means for the tech and startup ecosystem, CNBC-TV18 spoke to Murugavel Janakiraman, CEO of Matrimony.com and Nikhil Narendran, Partner for tech, media and telecom at Trilegal.
