08:19 AM EDT, 07/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- CenterPoint Energy ( CNP ) , the largest electricity provider in Texas, began restoring power Monday afternoon to its almost 2.3 million customers who lost power when Hurricane Beryl made landfall in the state, the company said late Monday.
The company said it had restored power to about 285,000 customers as of late Monday and expects to have 1 million impacted customers restored by Wednesday, with priority given to essential facilities critical to health and public safety.
Mobile generation units were also deployed, but customers in the hardest hit areas could experience extended outages, the company added.
Other oil and gas companies in Texas have also restarted operations after Hurricane Beryl hit the state early Monday near the coastal town of Matagorda, Reuters reported Tuesday.
Some energy firms preventively shut operations ahead of the hurricane and Texas' largest ports and navigation channels also remained closed, although its effect on production is expected to be minimal, according to Reuters. The ports were set to reopen Tuesday.
About 2.8 million customers were without power in Texas late Monday, Reuters said, citing data from PowerOutage.us.
Phillips 66 (PSX) reportedly said that its Lake Charles, Louisiana and Sweeny, Texas refineries were operating, while Citgo Petroleum temporarily decreased production over the weekend at its Corpus Christi plant. The companies did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for updates on the matter.
The Port of Corpus Christi reopened ship navigation on Monday afternoon, but the Port of Houston terminals will remain closed on Tuesday, Reuters said.
