10:15 AM EDT, 08/29/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Ciena (CIEN) and Arelion said Thursday they have completed the first-ever live transmission of data at 1.6 terabits per second using Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent digital signal processor modem.

The companies said Ciena's modem is expected to allow Arelion to handle higher traffic volumes and improve connectivity speeds. The trial also used Ciena's 6500 reconfigurable line system to streamline network operations, they added.

Shares of Ciena were up 1.3% in recent trading.
