Cineplex Appeals Competition Tribunal "Drip Pricing" Decision
Nov 2, 2024 6:31 PM

08:25 AM EDT, 10/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Cineplex ( CPXGF ) on Thursday said it filed an appeal against last month's decision by the Competition Tribunal that found the cinema operator had engaged in "drip pricing".

Cineplex ( CPXGF ) has also been granted an interim stay of the $39 million monetary penalty until its motion is heard by the Federal Court.

The Tribunal had ruled that Cineplex ( CPXGF ) had engaged in "drip pricing" by adding a mandatory $1.50 online booking fee at checkout. The penalty is equivalent to what Cineplex ( CPXGF ) received from consumers when the online booking fee was introduced in June 2022 until Dec 2023.

In its statement, Cineplex ( CPXGF ) said the booking fee is "presented on our website and app in a clear and prominent manner, and fully complies with the spirit and letter of the law."
