07:56 AM EDT, 05/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Cleveland-Cliffs ( CLF ) said Friday it targets to cut direct and indirect greenhouse gas, or GHG, emissions intensity per metric ton of crude steel by 30% from 2023 levels by 2035.
The company also aims to reduce material upstream Scope 3 emissions intensity per metric ton of crude steel by 20% by 2035 and reach near net zero GHG emissions per metric ton of crude steel by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5 degrees Celsius scenario.
The company said it set new emissions targets after meeting its previous goal of reducing absolute direct and indirect GHG emissions by 25% from 2017 levels well ahead of the 2030 deadline.
The emissions reduction from 2023 to 2035 will be primarily driven by projects in Middletown, Ohio, and Butler, Pennsylvania, according to the company.
Cleveland-Cliffs ( CLF ) said its capital expenditure outlook remains unchanged.
