It has been two months since violence broke out in the iPhone manufacturing plant, run by Taiwanese tech company—Wistron—when nearly 2,000 employees ransacked the plant, over alleged discrepancies in salary. But now, as Wistron is looking to resume operations, News-18’s Stacy Pereira caught up with Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary- Commerce & Industries of the Karnataka Government and asked him if there is going to be stricter monitoring for labour violations.

“The projection initially was limited number of employees but thereafter based on the demand the number of employees went up dramatically and very fast manner within a limited time and now I believe all of this is already identified and remedial measures have been taken by Wistron and I am sure and confident they will be able to work without a hitch,” said Gupta.

Speaking about the restart, he said, “At the government level we always work with the corporates keeping in mind the best interest of the corporates, the interest of the state and its people and we have been suggesting to them to start and resume operations at the earliest and I am sure the coming days they will start operations, I will leave it to their judgement to choose the day to restart, but we are happy to ensure that factory resumes its operations, the production will start, the workers will continue to go to factory.”

“It will ensure a better standard of living for the employees, vendors and support system as each one is dependent on the functioning of the company, so our top most priority in the government has been to resume operations,” said Gupta.
