Constellium Says ALIVE Research Project Achieved Up to 35% Weight Reduction in EV Battery Enclosures
Sep 6, 2024 12:25 PM

11:49 AM EDT, 09/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Constellium (CSTM) said Wednesday that its aluminium intensive vehicle enclosures, or ALIVE, research project with a consortium of eight partners achieved a 12% to 35% weight reduction in electric vehicle battery enclosure designs compared with existing OEM aluminium and steel designs.

The company said the consortium developed novel aluminum battery enclosure designs using its aluminium alloy products to address the cost, weight, manufacturing, and performance challenges faced by the research project's OEM partners, Volvo and BMW.

The weight reduction achieved in the project varied depending on the battery enclosure design, while performance targets were still met. The research project also developed cost models to detail manufacturing costs and capital expenditures that will support the future industrialization of the battery enclosures.

Constellium said the ALIVE research project had a budget of 15 million pounds ($19.7 million), half of which was funded through UK government subsidies. The company said also said it is already adapting the project's design findings to its other battery enclosure types.
