10:14 AM EDT, 10/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- CMS Energy ( CMS ) said Friday its Consumer Energy unit will receive nearly $20 million in funding from the US Department of Energy to provide visibility into Michigan's electric grid and support electric vehicle integration into the grid.

Consumers Energy ( CMS ) will match the commitment with an additional $20 million and will use the funds to upgrade 18,000 electric meters with artificial intelligence modules. The modules will provide real-time analytics and forecasts that will help understand the impact of electric vehicles on the grid, the company said.

The CMS Energy ( CMS ) unit is partnering with AI technology company Utilidata to deploy custom AI modules powered by NVIDIA ( NVDA ) , it said.

Other partners include General Motors ( GM ) , the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and the Electric Power Research Institute, the company added.
