Data Security Council of India's Rama Vedashree says expedite data privacy law
Sep 28, 2018 1:49 PM

Data Security Council of India (DSCI) on Friday has asked the government to expedite data privacy law in the winter session of the parliament this year.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18's Jude Sannith, Rama Vedashree, chief executive officer, said, "The very first enabler was the Supreme Court judgement declaring privacy as a fundamental right. Yesterday, the Supreme Court's Aadhaar judgement and the constitution of the Srikrishna Committee to come up with a comprehensive data protection law was also in that regard and that needs to be speeded."

Vedashree said, "India is a destination for serving so many countries, managing data and we also have a very aggressive, ambitious digitisation journey through programmes like Digital India and I think a comprehensive data protection regime is needed."

She further added, "Based on the report and the draft law that the committee in which I was a member of, ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) is doing consultations. September 30 is the deadline, where all external stakeholders can give consultations and all of that requires some time to review it and then the final draft law needs to be tabled in parliament. It needed to be speeded up, because we need to honour the judgement of Supreme Court. I believe from some quarters of government that there are efforts to table it in the winter session of parliament."
