Deep-sea mining developer The Metals Co said on
Tuesday it has asked the Trump administration to approve its
plans to mine the international seabed based on existing U.S.
regulations.
The applications come a week after President Donald Trump
signed an order seeking to jumpstart the mining of both U.S. and
international waters.
The Vancouver-based company asked the U.S. Department of
Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a
commercial recovery permit under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral
Resources Act of 1980 to operation in part of the Pacific Ocean
between Hawaii and Mexico known as the Clarion-Clipperton Zone
(CCZ).
The company also applied for two exploration licenses in the
CCZ.
