09:58 AM EDT, 09/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- EnerSys ( ENS ) said Friday that it has been selected by the US Department of Energy's Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains for negotiations on a $199 million funding award to support the development of its lithium-ion cell production facility in Greenville, South Carolina.
The US DOE funding is part of the $62 billion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to expand US battery manufacturing capabilities and improve processing capacity for the country's battery materials industry, the company said.
EnerSys ( ENS ) plans to invest $615 million over the next four years to build and commission the plant, which includes a $50 million investment to build a specialized production line for the US Department of Defense, the company said.
Construction is expected to begin next year, with commercial production planned to start in 2028, EnerSys ( ENS ) said.
