Enforcement Directorate summons Chanda Kochhar next week in ICICI Bank-Videocon PMLA case
Jun 8, 2019 7:19 AM

Former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar has been asked to depose before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) next week as the agency has decided to expand its probe into the money laundering case involving the bank and Videocon group by questioning some more officials of the private lender, officials said Saturday.

They said Chanda Kochhar has been asked to depose before the agency on June 10 in New Delhi after she sought an adjournment of the date scheduled for last Thursday.

The Enforcement Directorate had last month questioned and recorded the statements of Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar over multiple sessions.

Official sources had told PTI early this week that the federal probe agency is now mulling to call some more bank officials to confront them with the statement made by Chanda Kochhar and obtain a clear picture of the deal.

The agency is also preparing to analyse the details of assets of the Kochhars and others so that they can be provisionally attached under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Chanda Kochhar's brother-in-law and Deepak's brother, Rajiv Kochhar, has also been grilled by the ED multiple times in the case. Rajiv Kochhar is the founder of Singapore-based Avista Advisory and was also questioned by the CBI about his company's role in the restructuring of the loan.

He was asked by CBI sleuths about the help he had extended to Videocon in relation to the loan from ICICI Bank, which was part of an Rs400-billion credit given by a consortium of 20 banks to the group of Venugopal Dhoot.

The Kochhar couple has been questioned in the past too at the ED zonal office in Mumbai after the central agency conducted raids on March 1. The searches were conducted at the premises of Chanda Kochhar, her family and Venugopal Dhoot of Videocon Group in Maharashtra's Mumbai and Aurangabad.

The ED has registered a criminal case under the PMLA earlier this year against Chanda Kochhar, Deepak Kochhar, Dhoot and others to probe alleged irregularities and corrupt practices in sanctioning?1,875-crore loans by the ICICI Bank to the corporate group. This action of the agency was based on an FIR registered by the CBI.

The CBI has named all the three and Dhoot's companies -- Videocon International Electronics Ltd (VIEL) and Videocon Industries Limited (VIL) -- in its case.

The anti-corruption probe agency also named Supreme Energy, a company founded by Dhoot, and NuPower Renewables, a company controlled by Deepak Kochhar, in the FIR

The CBI alleged that Dhoot had invested in Nupower through his firm Supreme Energy in a quid pro quo to loans cleared by ICICI Bank after Chanda Kochhar took over as the CEO of the bank on May 1, 2009.

The ownership of Nupower and Supreme Energy changed hands through a complex web of shared transactions between Deepak Kochhar and Dhoot, the CBI alleged.

During its preliminary enquiry, the CBI found that six loans worth Rs 1,875 crore were sanctioned to the Videocon Group and companies associated with it between June 2009-October, 2011 in alleged violation of laid-down policies of the ICICI Bank, which have now become part of the probe.

The loans were declared non-performing assets in 2012, causing a loss of?1,730 crore to the bank, it alleged. The ED, the sources said, is also probing at least two other instances of loans given by the ICICI Bank (during Chanda Kochhar's tenure) to Gujarat-based pharmaceutical firm Sterling Biotech and to Bhushan Steel group, both of which are under its probe for alleged money laundering charges.

Cricket World Cup in Pictures: India beat Australia by 36 runs
Jun 9, 2019
India's top order fired in unison and their bowlers produced a tidy display to beat holders Australia by 36 runs in a blockbuster World Cup contest on Sunday. Shikhar Dhawan smashed 117, his 17th ODI century, and forged two significant partnerships with fellow opener Rohit Sharma and skipper Virat Kohli to power India to a commanding 352-5. In contrast, several frontline Australia batsmen got decent starts but none could bat deep enough as the five-time world champions, all out for 316 in exactly 50 overs, tasted their first defeat in the tournament. Earlier, Kohli opted to bat on a used wicket at the Oval but the flying start he may desired did not materialise. Australian quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins ensured the first five overs yielded just one boundary and a half chance. Rohit, then on four, got lucky as his chip burst through an airborne Nathan Coulter-Nile's fingers at short mid-wicket. India managed only 41 runs in the first 10 overs but Rohit and Dhawan were content to weather the hostile period before chancing their arms against other bowlers. Dhawan welcomed Coulter-Nile with three boundaries in his first over and Rohit hooked the quick for a six in his fourth. Coulter-Nile returned to end the burgeoning 127-run stand by dismissing the opener for 57. BIG TOTAL An unperturbed Dhawan went on to raise 93 runs with Kohli (82) to lay the foundation for a big total in front of a crowd of predominantly Indian fans who turned the stands into a sea of blue. The left-hander brought up his third ODI century at the Oval in five innings, underlining his fondness for English conditions having finished as top scorer at the Champions Trophy here in 2013 and 2017. Starc eventually dismissed Dhawan but Kohli and a promoted Hardik Pandya (48), who smacked three sixes in his 27-ball blitz, provided the late flourish to help India past the 350-mark. Australia seemed to have luck on their side when Aaron Finch's men embarked on what could have been the highest successful chase in a World Cup match. David Warner dragged a Jasprit Bumrah (3-61) delivery onto the leg stump but the zing bail, for the fifth time in the tournament, did not fall off the groove despite the contact. Finch departed for 36 chasing a non-existent second run but Warner (56) then collaborated with Steve Smith in a 72-run stand, although he looked subdued as he brought up his second fifty in three matches. Usman Khawaja made 42 but Australia suffered a body blow when Smith was out leg-before for 69 after India decided to review the original not-out decision. Australia's narrow victory against West Indies was secured with Coulter-Nile's belligerent 92 at number eight but he could not repeat that performance. Alex Carey, who had dropped Pandya on nought, made 55 not out but could not change the outcome of the match.
