EU Antitrust Chief Reportedly Warns Apple and Meta on Fees, Disparaging Competitors
Mar 20, 2024 4:32 AM

07:13 AM EDT, 03/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) and Meta Platforms ( META ) were warned Tuesday by the European Union's antitrust chief that fees they are charging on services may violate the Digital Markets Act, which aims to give consumers more choices, Reuters reported.

Margrethe Vestager told Reuters the 0.50 euros per user annual fee Apple ( AAPL ) app developers will have to pay for using its platform may not comply with the law, which requires it to open its system to rivals.

Additionally, she also questioned whether Meta's fees for ad-free Facebook and Instagram accounts were "compliant with the DMA."

According to the report, Vestager said companies discouraging users from switching services by disparaging rivals could also trigger investigations.
