08:27 AM EDT, 06/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- European industry groups urged the European Commission and the European Union member states Monday to swiftly adopt an "inclusive and non-discriminatory" cybersecurity certification scheme for cloud services.
In their joint statement issued Monday, 28 business groups said the March draft of the proposed scheme is considered the "most balanced version" that has been discussed over the last three years and should be adopted "without further delay."
"We believe that an inclusive and non-discriminatory [European cybersecurity certification scheme for cloud services] EUCS that supports the free movement of cloud services in Europe will help our members prosper at home and abroad, contribute to Europe's digital ambitions, and strengthen its resilience and security," the joint statement reads.
The Commission, the bloc's cybersecurity agency ENISA, and the member states are set to discuss the scheme Tuesday.
The March version removed the so-called sovereignty provisions requiring US tech giants like Amazon.com ( AMZN ) , Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) and Microsoft ( MSFT ) to set up a joint venture or cooperate with an EU-based company to qualify for the certification, Reuters reported Monday.
