European Commission Notifies Alphabet of Digital Markets Act Noncompliance, Adopts Requirements for Apple
Mar 19, 2025 8:40 AM

11:09 AM EDT, 03/19/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union's European Commission said Tuesday it has notified Alphabet (GOOG) its preliminary findings show two of the tech giant's services fail to comply with the Digital Markets Act.

Separately, the EC also said Tuesday it has adopted two decisions under the DMA specifying requirements Apple ( AAPL ) must meet in order to comply with its interoperability obligation.

For Alphabet, the EC said its preliminary view is that certain features and functionalities of Google Search favor the company's own services over rival ones, "thus not ensuring the transparent, fair and non-discriminatory treatment of third-party services as required by the DMA." In addition, the EC said Alphabet's Google Play prevents app developers from "freely steering consumers to other channels for better offers."

For Apple ( AAPL ), the EC said the first set of required measures will grant app developers and device manufacturers better access to iPhone features that interact with smartwatches, headphones and TVs to ensure devices of all brands work better on the phones. The second set of requirements seek to improve "access to technical documentation on features not yet available to third parties, timely communication and updates, and a more predictable timeline for the review of interoperability requests," the EC said.

Alphabet and Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately reply to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
