Exchange-Traded Funds Edge Higher, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Friday as Investors Exercise Caution Ahead of Key Jobs Data

08:24 AM EST, 02/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.02% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.03% in Friday's premarket activity, as investors exercised caution ahead of the January employment report.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.01%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gaining 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures slipping 0.04% before the start of regular trading.

The January national employment situation bulletin from Washington will be posted at 8:30 am ET.

The University of Michigan consumer sentiment report for February and the wholesale inventories bulletin for December will be released at 10 am ET.

The Baker Hughes domestic oil-and-gas rig count posts at 1 pm ET.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman speaks at 9:25 am ET, and Governor Adriana Kugler speaks at 12 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 1.1% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 1.2% higher.

Power Play:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.3%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.5% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was down 1.2%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was flat, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.2%.

BILL (BILL) shares were down more than 29% in recent Friday premarket activity after the company said Thursday it expects Q3 revenue of $352.5 million to $357.5 million, lower than FactSet analyst estimates of $360.3 million.

Winners and Losers:

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.6%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.8% lower.

Perella Weinberg Partners ( PWP ) shares were up 3% pre-bell Friday after the company reported higher Q4 adjusted net income and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.4%.

Prairie Operating ( PROP ) stock was down 7.4% before Friday's opening bell after the company launched an underwritten public offering of its common stock for $200 million. Prairie also said it has agreed to acquire certain assets from Bayswater Exploration and Production and its affiliated entities for about $602.8 million.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.2%, the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) gained 0.3%, while the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Proto Labs ( PRLB ) stock was up 6.8% before the opening bell after the company reported better-than-expected Q4 non-GAAP net income and revenue.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) lost 0.6%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was down by 0.3%, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was inactive.

Amazon.com ( AMZN ) shares were down 3% pre-bell after the company said Thursday it expects to spend over $100 billion on AI infrastructure this year.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) , the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) and the iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) were inactive.

Avantor ( AVTR ) stock was down 2.3% premarket after the company reported lower Q4 net sales that trailed FactSet analyst expectations.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 0.8% to reach $71.15 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.01% at $3.41 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) advanced 0.8%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 1.1% higher.

Gold futures for April advanced 0.5% to $2,889.70 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures gained 0.1% to reach $32.70 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) were up 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.1% lower.
