Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Tuesday as Markets Recover Ahead of Economic Data

08:26 AM EDT, 03/11/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) 0.5% higher in Tuesday's premarket activity as markets recovered ahead of key inflation data releasing in the next few days.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.3%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

US small business optimism fell in February as the NFIB index dropped to 100.7 from 102.8, while uncertainty rose to its second-highest level on record.

The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, for January will be released at 10 am ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was up by 3.7% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 6% higher.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was flat and the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was flat. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

2seventy Bio ( TSVT ) stock was up more than 72% premarket after the company said late Monday that it has agreed to be acquired by Bristol Myers Squibb ( BMY ) for a price of $5 per share in an all-cash deal valuing the company at about $286 million.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was up 0.2%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) retreated 0.01%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) advanced 0.5%, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) was flat.

Kohl's (KSS) shares were down more than 15% pre-bell after the company reported lower fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was up 1.4%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) advanced 0.9%.

HighPeak Energy ( HPK ) stock was down nearly 6% before Tuesday's opening bell after closing the previous session with a more than 1% decline. The company late Monday posted lower Q4 net income and revenue.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.3%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 0.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) rose 1.7%, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) was 1% higher.

ASML Holding ( ASML ) shares were up 2.6% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company signed a five-year partnership deal with imec to advance research in the semiconductor industry.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.7%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 1.9%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 1.4% lower.

Interactive Brokers Group ( IBKR ) shares were up nearly 2% pre-bell Tuesday after the company said that its platform now provides access to the Ljubljana Stock Exchange.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) was inactive while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) was up 1.6% and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) was inactive.

Korn Ferry ( KFY ) stock was up 1.3% before the opening bell after the company reported higher fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings that beat FactSet analyst estimates.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 1.3% to $66.90 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas gained 1.1% to reach $4.54 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was up 1.4%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) rose 0.8%.

Gold futures for April advanced 0.7% to $2,918.30 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures gained 1.4% to reach $32.98 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) was up nearly 1%, and the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 1.8% higher.
