BOGOTA, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Cerrejon, Colombia's largest coal
mine and a unit of Glencore ( GLCNF ), said on Thursday that an
explosives attack on its rail line in the northern department of
La Guajira forced it to suspend train operations.
* The attack took place shortly after midnight near
kilometer 125 of the 150-km (93-mile) railway that carries
thermal coal from the open-pit mine to Puerto Bolivar on the
Caribbean coast for export, the company said.
* "No one was injured and there were no impacts on the
safety of our workers," Cerrejon said in a statement.
* Authorities were inspecting the area while the company
assessed possible damage to the infrastructure.
* Cerrejon said the bombing was the fifth attack on its
infrastructure so far this year.
* The company did not address who might have been
responsible.
* Cerrejon, which employs more than 12,000 people in
Colombia, has faced repeated disruptions from protests by
Indigenous communities and bomb attacks on its railway that have
affected operations.
* The area also has a presence of fighters from the National
Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group and a dissident faction of
the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
* Communities near the mine have accused Swiss-based
Glencore ( GLCNF ) of causing environmental damage in the area. Cerrejon
produced 16.8 million metric tons of coal in 2025, down 12.5%
from 19.2 million tons in 2024.
