01:23 PM EST, 11/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- ExxonMobil ( XOM ) and BASF have signed a joint development agreement to accelerate methane pyrolysis, with a plan to build a demonstration plant in Baytown, Texas, to support commercial readiness, ExxonMobil ( XOM ) said Monday.
The technology uses electricity to convert natural gas into hydrogen and solid carbon without process-related carbon dioxide emissions, ExxonMobil ( XOM ) said. It requires significantly less energy than water electrolysis, the company added.
BASF has validated its reactor concept at a test plant in Ludwigshafen, while ExxonMobil ( XOM ) brings scale-up expertise.
The Baytown facility is planned to produce up to 2,000 tons of low-emission hydrogen and 6,000 tons of solid carbon a year, ExxonMobil ( XOM ) said.
