04:21 PM EDT, 08/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday it was holding Boeing ( BA ) accountable in response to criticism the agency may have been too lax in scrutiny prior to a Jan. 5 incident that saw a door plug blow out midair.
In a statement detailing some of the agency's actions since the January Alaska Air flight, the FAA said it was continuing "aggressive oversight of the company [to] ensure it fixes its systemic production-quality issues."
Since the incident, FAA has added more inspectors at Boeing's ( BA ) production facility in Washington and has meeting weekly with officials to review performance metrics and other issues.
The FAA announcement came as the National Transportation Safety Board Wednesday reconvened to review the agency's monitoring. The FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker in June acknowledged the agency was "too hands off" in its interactions with Boeing ( BA ) and other companies. He told a Senate committee FAA officials had been too focused on paperwork and administrative issues rather than inspections and maintaining quality controls.
The NTSB began its hearings on Tuesday. The company's executive reportedly told the panel it's not clear exactly when the door plug was removed for repairs and reinstalled missing four of the bolts.
