04:09 PM EDT, 04/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it has adopted a final rule requiring more aviation organizations to implement a safety management framework to proactively identify hazards and address risks.
The FAA is now requiring charter airlines, commuter airlines, air tour operators, and aircraft manufacturers in the US to implement a Safety Management System, or SMS.
Under the Aircraft Certification, Safety and Accountability Act of 2020, the FAA is directed to mandate SMS only for aircraft manufacturers, like Boeing (BA).
US airlines have been required since 2018 to implement SMS, while some manufacturers also operate with SMS in place.
"By incorporating SMS, these aviation organizations will be better able to develop and implement mitigations that are appropriate to their specific environment and operations," the FAA said.
