07:14 AM EDT, 03/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Florida passed a law Monday that bars children 13 years old and younger from holding social media accounts such as Snap's (SNAP) Snapchat and Meta Platforms' ( META ) Instagram and Facebook.
The measure, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2025, also requires teens aged 14 and 15 to obtain their parent's consent to obtain an account.
The law requires social media companies to cancel accounts not in compliance with the rules and use third-party tools to verify the age of users, Reuters reported.
Meta Platforms ( META ) opposed the legislation, arguing that age verification would raise privacy concerns, Reuters said.
Meta and Snap did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
