02:01 PM EDT, 10/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Freeport-McMoRan ( FCX ) was working to extinguish a fire at its new copper smelter in Indonesia, according to multiple reports on Monday.
A Freeport Indonesia spokesperson told local news outlets there were no known injuries. The fire began around 5:45 pm at the facility in Gresik, East Java (6:45 am ET), the Jakarta Globe reported.
The blaze has been brought under control and the company said it will assess the damage and determine the cause once the area is safe to enter, Reuters said.
Witnesses to the blaze said they heard two loud explosions, according to the reports.
Freeport in early July said its Indonesian subsidiary had "substantially completed" work on the new Manyar smelter and started commissioning operations. The facility had been expected to begin making copper cathodes within a few months although that timetable was delayed somewhat after water and steam leak were detected last month during testing, Reuters reported earlier.
