11:29 AM EDT, 03/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Frontier Group Holdings ( ULCC ) is temporarily offering a free checked bag and other perks after competitor Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) last week scrapped its free baggage policy.
One checked bag will fly free on Frontier when customers use a promo code from May 28 through Aug. 18, though bookings must be completed by March 24, the Frontier Airlines parent said Tuesday. Frontier will consider making the offer permanent if it proves to be popular.
Shares of Frontier fell 5% in Tuesday trade.
"Some airlines are walking away from what travelers love, but we're running towards it," Frontier Airlines Chief Executive Barry Biffle said in a statement.
Last week, Southwest ( LUV ) announced that it will begin charging non-royalty members for checked bags beginning with flights booked on or after May 28.
For nonstop travel beginning today through Aug. 18, Frontier customers will be able to opt in for the carrier's economy bundle for free, which includes a carry-on bag, seat selection and flight changes at no additional cost.
"We're bringing back the things people love about flying -- free bags, free seat selection, and flexibility -- without the extra fees," Biffle said. "No games, just great value."
Southwest ( LUV ) made the policy change announcement while lowering its first-quarter outlook for a key revenue metric. Also last week, Delta Air Lines (DAL) reduced its year-over-year first-quarter revenue growth forecast.
Frontier in February reported record revenue of $1 billion, up 12% year over year. It expects earnings per share to range between breaking even and coming in at $0.07 in the ongoing quarter. The FactSet consensus is for Frontier to break even.
